Adlai E. Stevenson Historic Home: Complex Renovation on a National Historic Landmark
Alfa Chicago was proud to complete the exterior renovation of the historic Adlai E. Stevenson Historic Home, a designated landmark property. Funded through a grant from the Illinois State Historic Preservation Office, the project involved a comprehensive exterior restoration of the home, which was originally constructed in 1938.
The scope of work included replacement of all exterior artisan shiplap siding, reinforcement of deteriorated structural walls, tuckpointing of masonry surrounding the chimneys, installation of new flashings, selective slate roof repairs, reconstruction of the exterior wood staircases, rebuilding of the concrete basement staircase and foundation wall, and replacement of the historic copper gutter system, along with select hardware and window restorations.
Every aspect of the project was carefully executed in strict accordance with SHPO historic preservation requirements. Through its expertise in custom craftsmanship and historic restoration, Alfa Chicago successfully replicated traditional construction techniques and materials that are rarely used in modern building practices today.
